Overshoot Day marks the date when the demand for ecological resources and services by humanity, or the population of a specific country, in a given year exceeds the capacity for their regeneration within that same year. Earth Overshoot Day is announced annually on June 5th, World Environment Day. Last year, it fell on July 24th; this year, there is some good news as it fell on July 30th, though this is not enough.
Estonia’s Overshoot Day in 2025 was March 4th. This placed us fifth in the world; only Qatar, Luxembourg, Singapore, and Mongolia ranked ahead of us. This year, the necessary data to calculate Estonia's Overshoot Day was unavailable.
Ecological Overshoot
Ecological overshoot refers to humanity's excessive use of nature; we consume more within a given timeframe than nature can regenerate during that same period. Ecological overshoot is characterized, for instance, by the felling of forests faster than they can regrow or the overgrazing of pastures without allowing them time to recover. This phenomenon has been occurring since at least the early 1970s, marking the onset of the Anthropocene epoch. The consequences are severe: deforestation, the depletion of groundwater reserves, the loss of productive soil, the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and, as a result, extreme weather conditions.
All is not yet lost!
There are many solutions for postponing Earth Overshoot Day—at personal, national, and global levels. These solutions fall into five categories: planetary health, cities, energy, food, and population.
As an individual, there are several simple ways to improve the situation:
Get around by bike or bus, or, even better, on foot! (helps push back Earth Overshoot Day by 9 days)
Change your diet: eat fewer animal products and more plant-based foods! (helps push back Earth Overshoot Day by 3 days)
Don't tumble-dry your laundry; let it air-dry instead! (helps push back Earth Overshoot Day by 1.3 days)
Wear your clothes until they are completely worn out or pass them on for reuse; extend their lifespan as much as possible! (helps push back Earth Overshoot Day by 5 days)
